But I think I’ve asked a couple of good ones too, and I’ve pursued them and have found the answers personally satisfying, and so far at least [they] have stood the test of scientific time. You’ve always intrigued me because of your approach to fish biology, which goes all the way from functional morphology and physiology at a very detailed level to the broader ecological perspective of these phenomena. When did you first get into actual studies of fish vision? I was in Fred Crescitelli’s lab. Even though I didn’t work on vision, I learned all the lore.

At Hawaii, Peter Sale was a graduate student of Bill Gosline, while Phil Lobel had him as an undergraduate advisor. The individuals on these trees not only have shared a tradition of how to do science, including the relevance and importance of fieldwork, but also have a ready-made family of contacts.

I had gone with Norris and Brocato, and we had been collecting fishes around Catalina Island for Marineland. In the evenings we’d come in and anchor in Catalina Harbor, which is a very protected area. While Frank Brocato was cooking dinner (my job was to cook breakfast) I would climb into the crow’s nest to enjoy the setting sun. One evening, I noticed groups of fishes schooling at the surface. They were progressing around the curve of the harbor and heading for the open sea, but they did not proceed in a straight line.
